Are you interested in the archaeology, history and culture of Italy. Are you seeking like minded people to exchange knowledge and experience unique opportunities to visit the ancient archaeological sites?
In 1986, JFC Naples Command had approved the original charter. At that time the organization was made up of a group of 12 highly talented and dedicated persons. Notably Dr Paul Arthur (lecturer at University of Salerno), Dr Sarah Bisel (physical anthropologist who did the preliminary work on the Herculaneum skeletons), Dr Michael Karris (historian, University of Rome) and Raol Botello (underwater archaeologist) along with others who each brought particular skills, experience and enthusiasm. During this time:
• 82 articles were published (between 1986-1991) covering trip reviews, roman baths, architecture, construction processes, caves, paintings, local excavations, principles of carbon dating, etc.
• 23 trips/tours were conducted. Seven of these were underwater in the Napoli area.
• At least three dig sites/events involved the participation of IAS members.
• IAS provided translation services to the National Archeological Museum of Naples.
• IAS was responsible for the rescue and transfer of the twin Dioscuro statue places in the Baia castle in 1987.
IAS is a non-profit organization, run by volunteers only. Enthusiastic volunteers though! We try to organize one trip once a month (except for July and December), which may be in our neighbourhood, all the way up to Rome or an overnight trip to Umbria. Trips are always on a Saturday. For those individuals that have a more serious passion for exploring the history and culture here, we offer the opportunities to participate with local archaeological endeavors in the area.
We have our Forum Meeting the second Thursday of each month. The meetings generally consist of a lecture (either by a member or our staff or a visiting lecturer) and a round table discussion of upcoming events, tours and special opportunities for those who have a more serious interest in the archaeology of the area.
Membership is open for everybody, costs are
euro 20,- single membership p/year.
euro 30,- for family membership p/year.
Our next event is our Morbid Curiosity Tour on 11 February.
